HOW TO SPEND 2 DAYS IN SAVANNAH

Embarking on a journey to Savannah, Georgia, is akin to stepping through the pages of a time-worn novel, where every cobblestone street, majestic square, and whispering oak tells a story of intrigue, history, and southern charm. Savannah, with its hauntingly beautiful landscapes and genteel demeanor, beckons travelers to immerse themselves in its rich tapestry of culture, cuisine, and captivating history. Allow me to be your guide through the enchanting city of Savannah, offering personal insights and tips to ensure your visit is as memorable as the city itself.

Getting to and around Savannah:

By Air: The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) serves as the primary gateway for visitors flying into the city. Located just a short drive from the historic district, it offers convenient access to the heart of Savannah.

By Car: Driving to Savannah offers its own rewards, with picturesque views along the coastal South Carolina and Georgia highways. Interstate 95 and Interstate 16 are the major routes leading into the city, offering a scenic journey through the Lowcountry.

By Train: For those who prefer the romance of rail travel, Amtrak’s Palmetto and Silver Service lines make stops in Savannah, providing a leisurely route from New York down to Miami.

Best time ti visit:

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) offer the most idyllic settings for a visit to Savannah. These months provide a respite from the summer heat and humidity, enveloping the city in mild temperatures and the breathtaking beauty of azaleas and magnolias in bloom or the golden hues of autumn. The spring season also heralds the famous Savannah Music Festival, making it a particularly vibrant time to visit.

Where to stay:

Charleston offers a wide range of accommodations, from historic hotels to modern boutiques. The Wentworth Mansion exudes old-world luxury with its opulent rooms and attentive service. The Dewberry Charleston offers mid-century modern elegance, while Zero George Street provides a boutique experience in a series of restored historic homes.

Day 1:

Morning- Historic District and Forsyth Park

Begin your Savannah adventure in the heart of its historic district. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Goose Feathers Cafe before embarking on a walking tour. Discover the intricate architecture, lush squares, and historic homes that line the streets, each with its own story.

Make your way to Forsyth Park, the largest park in the historic district. The iconic fountain at its center is a must-see, offering perfect photo opportunities. Wander through the fragrant garden paths and under the majestic oak trees, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.

Afternoon- Lunch on River Street and Explore the Waterfront

Head to River Street for lunch, where you can sample local seafood dishes or Southern comfort food at one of the many eateries overlooking the Savannah River. Afterward, explore the cobblestone streets, popping into boutiques, galleries, and artisan shops housed in historic buildings. Take a riverboat cruise to experience Savannah from the water, offering a unique perspective of the city’s historic waterfront and architecture.

Evening- Dinner

Savannah’s culinary scene is a delightful fusion of traditional Southern fare and contemporary cuisine. My recommendations is The Grey, if you’ve ever watched the Netflix series “Chef’s Table” this restaurant was featured there. Housed in a restored Greyhound bus terminal, The Grey offers a high-end take on Southern cuisine, marrying local ingredients with global techniques.

Day 2:

Morning- Discover the Antebellum Architecture

Visit the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters for a glimpse into the antebellum South, offering insights into both the grandeur and the grim realities of the period. But also walk around the center of Savannah where you can see beautiful houses in Antebellum Architecture some of my favorite: The Gingerbread House, Mercer Williams House, and Andrew Low House.

Afternoon- Classic Southern Lunch followed by Leopold’s Ice-cream

A classic southern lunch is a must The Lady & Sons is great spot to try out southern food. It’s family style dinning and all you can eat (classic southern). After lunch head to the famous Leopold’s Ice-cream shop, a classic parlor that has been serving up sweet treats since 1919.

Food and drinks recommendations:

The Grey- elevated Southern cuisine. Great spot for dinner.

Goose and Feathers Cafe- great spot for breakfast and coffee, very retro setting and delicious pastries.

The Lady & Sons- classic southern dishes like poppy seed salad, corn on the cob, fried chicken..Family style eating where all plates are shared.

Leopold’s Ice-Cream- iconic spot in Savannah, this ice-cream parlor has been serving ice-cream since 1919.
