NYC To Miami Roadtrip [7 Day Itinerary]

In January we decided to leave gloomy and cold NYC and go somewhere sunny and warm, the decision fell upon Miami. Instead of directly flying NYC to Miami we decided to do a fun roadtrip along the East Coast and make stops along the way. So, we booked a one way car rental with pick up from NYC and drop off at Miami, packed all our things and started our one week long roadtrip. During that week we passed through 9 states and made stops in 7. We visited historic towns such as Charleston, Savannah and St. Augustine, national parks, cute little coastal towns and much more.

In this blog post I break down our 7 day itinerary on the East Coast.

Day 1: From NYC to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Start your adventure early from NYC and head south towards Delaware. We departed in the afternoon so it got dark early and didn’t make any stops until we reached Rehoboth Beach. However, if you depart earlier a fun stop along the way can be Princeton in NJ, a cute little university town and the gorgeous campus of Princeton University. We arrive in Rehoboth Beach, checked into our hotel, had a quick dinner in the hotel and went straight to bed.

Day 2: Maryland’s Hidden Gems to Virginia Beach

Spent the morning walking around Rohoboth Beach, very cute coastal town, as it wasn’t season a lot of the places were closed. Grabbed coffee and breakfast and began our scenic drive to Assateague National Shore in Maryland, where wild beaches and the famous wild horses await. Entry is $25 per car and there is parking on site. We spend a good 2-3 hours walking around the shore, watching the wild horses and taking in the beauty. On one side you have the Atlantic Ocean on the other sweet water marshes. After soaking in the natural beauty, we headed to Virginia Beach via the iconic Chesapeake Bay Bridge, we were passing as the sun was setting and the sunset was gorgeous. We spent the evening exploring Virginia Beach and stopped by Chick’s Oyster Bar for some crab cakes and blue crab dip.

Day 3: Durham, North Carolina

We departed for North Carolina and spent our day in Durham. Explore the town, walked around Duke University campus, which has stunning architecture and lush gardens. Honestly, there wasn’t much to see or do around so we called it an early day.

Day 4: Charleston, South Carolina’s Historic Charm

In the morning we continued our drive to Charleston, South Carolina. Once we arrived we started exploring Charleston’s Historic Downtown, known for its well-preserved architecture, cobblestone streets, and rich history. Then continued to the River Walk which has some amazing views over the water and some more stunning architecture. For dinner we went to Poogan’s Porch and had some traditional southern food (must try are the shrimps and grits), and then went for a quick drink at Church and Union, which is a bar in an old church before heading to our hotel. I have a more detailed travel guide for Charleston here.

Day 5: Charleston to Savannah, Georgia

Spent the morning in Charleston went to visit the Charleston Market, grabbed brunch at Harken Cafe and went on tour of Boone Hall Plantation, where you can admire the impressive avenue lined with ancient oaks, learn about the history of the plantation and enslavement. Ticket for adult is $28 and includes a guided tour of the house and the property. I would highly recommend visiting a plantation if you are ever in Charleston or the area. As we departed for Savannah, Georgia we made a quick stop to the 400 year old Angel Oak Tree, which is the oldest tress east of the Mississippi. I have a more detailed travel guide for Charleston here. We arrived early evening in Savannah, checked in our hotel and then headed for dinner at The Grey– an acclaimed restaurant for its upscale Southern cuisine. If you’ve ever watched Chef’s Table on Netflix this restaurant was featured there.

Day 6: Discover Savannah

We spent the morning having breakfast at Goose Feathers Cafe. Before we started exploring Savannah. Its historic squares, beautiful parks, stunning architecture and the famous River Street. We made a little ice-cream stop at the famous Leopold’s Ice-cream parlor to try their famous ice-cream before continuing our exploration. For late lunch we stopped by The Lady and Sons for some traditional southern food. I have a more detailed travel guide for Savannah here. In the evening we departed for St Augustine, Florida.

Day 7: St. Augustine to Miami, Florida

We began our final day exploring St. Augustine’s historical landmarks, including the ancient forts and picturesque waterfront. We then continued our journey down south and made a quick stop at Cocoa Beach, the weather was very gloomy so we just spend half an hour walking on the beach. Finally, arrive in Miami in the evening.
