Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States, is a vibrant destination for history buffs, culture seekers, and foodies alike. Washington D.C. is just a 4h drive from NYC so it is a great option for a weekend trip even a day trip (if you take an early morning bus or train). Few days in D.C. are enough to go through all the sights and fun stuff.

Getting to and around Washington D.C.:

Washington, D.C. is served by three major airports: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). You can also reach the city by train or bus from nearby cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. We decided to do a roadtrip from NYC to Washington D.C. with a stopover in Philadelphia, it takes roughly 4h drive from NYC.

Washington, D.C. has an extensive public transportation system, including a metro subway system, buses, and trains. Taxis, ride-sharing services, and bike rentals are also widely available.

If you rent a car, finding a parking is pretty easy, even in the center.

Best time to visit:

Spring time is the best time to visit Washington D.C. it is known for the picturesque cherry blossom season. This trip took place the first week of February and it was a bit cold, but nothing dramatic.

Where to stay:

There are plenty of accommodation options in Washington, D.C. from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels. Popular neighborhoods for tourists include Downtown, Dupont Circle, and Georgetown. For a more local experience, consider staying in neighborhoods like Shaw or Adams Morgan.

Must see and do:

The National Mall- home to some of the most iconic monuments and museums in the United States. The Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial are just a few of the must-see attractions on the Mall.

Smithsonian Museums: Washington, D.C. is home to many world-class museums, most of which are part of the Smithsonian Institution. The National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of American History, and National Museum of African American History and Culture are just a few of the highlights. Best of all, admission to all Smithsonian museums is free!

Georgetown: This historic neighborhood is known for its charming cobblestone streets, high-end shopping, and delicious restaurants. Be sure to check out the Georgetown Waterfront Park for stunning views of the Potomac River

Capitol Hill- This neighborhood is home to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, and Supreme Court, making it a must-see for history buffs. The Eastern Market, a popular food and craft market, is also located in Capitol Hill.

The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., the iconic building has been the center of American politics and diplomacy for over two centuries. The White House features stunning architecture, including the famous North Portico and South Lawn, and houses the Oval Office, Cabinet Room, and numerous other offices and meeting spaces.

Take a bike ride or rent an electric scooter: Washington, D.C. is a bike-friendly city with many dedicated bike lanes and trails. Rent a bike or e-scooter and explore the city on two wheels.
