Europe, Netherlands, Travels

Venice of the North

August 29, 2018

165 canals, around 500 bridges, named after the river Amstel, Amsterdam is often called the Venice of the north. This city has been on my travel bucket list forever, and although I’ve been to most of Europe I have never visited the Netherlands, until this summer. And honestly all my expectations were fulfilled if not even exceeded. Brick buildings, houses that look as if made out of ginger bread, rich history, open skyline and a relaxed lifestyle. There is so much to do and see in Amsterdam that I decided to do a small travel guide for it.

Where to stay:

There are many options for your stay in Amsterdam, there is an option to stay in a hotel or rent an airbnb. Since prices are a bit high for hotels, a lot of people tend to find accomodation outside of Amsterdam or in a nearby city. We stayed at Bilderberg Garden Hotel which was great, close to Museumplein and in a very quiet area of Amsterdam.

Getting around:

Many of you might presume that the ultimate transportation in the Netherlands is the bicycle, and it is. But, I would not suggest renting a bike to do sightseeing or see Amsterdam. There are a lot of bikes, so it is crowded and for foreigners and people who ride a bike once a year it can be confusing and hard. We walked most of the time, since the main attractions and places we wanted to see were close to us. However, there is an option to take tram and go around.

Must see’s:

Rijkmuseum- Is one the world’s finest art museum, with works of Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer and additional 7500 pieces. Apart from the world famous pieces, you can also enjoy the iconic architecture. Tip: to avoid crowds visit the museum early morning or lunch time.

Van Gogh Museum- Right across the park from Rijkmuseum, very interesting and futuristic architecture. This museum was a must for me hence Van Gogh is my favorite artist. During the whole visit I was amazed by the works displayed as well as all the information and details of Van Gogh’s life. Fun fact: the Van Gogh museum has the largest collection of Van Gogh’s painting, sketches, drawings and letters.

Coffee Houses and Red Lights District- This part of Amsterdam has transformed into art and coffee shop scene over the years. Even if you are not a fan of the things available there, still don’t miss it out.

Anne Frank House- one of the main tourist attractions in Amsterdam, hundreds of tourists visit it daily to catch a glimpse of Anne’s bedroom and journal. Unfortunately, we didn’t book tickets online so it was impossible to visit it.

Must do:

Buy flowers- situated right on the canal is Bloemenmarkt also known as the floating flower market. With hundreds of dozen flowers in all colors and sized. Definitely worth seeing it.

Canal Cruise- one of my favorite activities we did in Amsterdam. Taking a canal cruise during sunset, it was absolutely magical. We booked a cruise from Friendship Amsterdam, and it was fabulous. The tour guide skipped the majority of mainstream attractions and took us around more local spots.

Admire Jordaan neighborhood- it is considered the most picturesque neighborhoods of Amsterdam. Bridges with bikes parked on, cute town houses, pubs and small markets.

Stroll through Vondelpark- located between Rijkmuseum and Van Gogh, made for a afternoon stroll. If you have time try to have a picnic in the park.

Where to eat:

Pluk– one of those insta-worthy brunch places. The food was as good as it looked like. Various of choices from sandwiches to smoothie bowls and sweets.

Van Wonderen Stroopwafels– Netherlands is the home of stroopwaffles, thin waffles sticked together with honey, doesn’t get any more delicious. In this shop they serve it the traditional way, and you can also add toppings of your choice.

Manneken Pis– two words: best fries; I am crazy about fries, it is a food I just can’t quit eating (although it’s not healthy), there are a lot of kiosks that sell fries. But Manneken Pis is one of the oldest ones and offers a various selection of dips.

Amsterdam was dreamy for me, a combination of old and new, rich history and contemporary art…and it only took me a few minutes to completely fall in love with it. I would definitely return for a visit very very soon.

Both cities are equally as charming and we love them equally. Amsterdam’s canals are much more uniformed but the houses are all so lovely. Worth a visit for sure!
