Under the skin

September 10, 2017

With great pleasure I dedicate this week’s post to someone who is very dear to me, the young and extremely talented artist Nadja Petrovic, who has crowned her talent with a diploma at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. A fact that speaks for itself about her academically recognized artistic heights. I have known her for a while now and I know her artistic journey very well, from the Small Montmartre of Bitola, through Saint Martins College, to the famous Florence.

The smell of oil paints and charcoal pencils in her childhood bedroom still awake memories from our times spent together as friends. Now she has returned home, with one purpose…to present what has she been working on during all those years and why that Florentine address was so significant for her artistic journey to home audience. In one modern gallery, in Skopje, she exhibited her work of large scale format of portraits and acts from the cycle ‘Under the skin’.

The motif of the human face or body, the portrait or the self-portrait and the act are the center of her artistic interest at this stage of her arts. The theme of acts and portraits is central throughout all phases of art history, through different style periods…that is why I was fascinated by Nadja’s decision for her first solo exhibition to be dedicated to the theme that is always intriguing and inspiring, new and different. Her paintings are with strong expressiveness and through which a wider sociological connotation of the characters that she has chosen as representation of her world can be read out, and through them contemporary society.

With her portraits and acts she showed the objectification, deconstruction and glorification of her models- social archetypes, but at the same time ordinary people from her immediate surroundings. The duality of this topic to show the model both bold and brittle at the same moment, Nadja Petrovic through deep sincerity, exceeds that duality, and to us as art lovers to remind us that in this artistic daintiness and stylized inventiveness are ordinary people of flesh and blood.

Dear Nadja, this is just the beginning of your artistic heights. Thank you for the artistic enjoyment you made for us in the gallery of NLB Bank Skopje. Also, a big thank you for the opportunity to wear this amazing design by another dear artistic friend of mine Jelena Stanarevic…and all the beautifully captured moments by Simone Kalica.
