AFTERNOON TEA

It’s time to drink tea, proper British tea at 5 o’clock in the afternoon.

A tradition that has become a cult in this country. In Britain drinking tea, is not the same as ours drinking coffee, after a meal or in the morning. Tea and drinking of tea is considered a meal.

I am taking you in one traditional place, where true Londoners drink their afternoon tea, in the historic hotel Grosvenor near the Buckingham Palace. But how it all began…

Until the 18th century in Britain the main drink consumed was beer, more precisely the beer called ale. However, this habit changed when the British King Charles II married the Portuguese Princess Catherine of Barganza. Princess Catherine is the one who created this typical British tradition, afternoon tea

In that time only two meals existed breakfast and dinner, dinner being the most important and biggest meal. Duchess Anna Maria of Bedford is the one who introduced the afternoon tea as a meal. For her the break between breakfast and dinner was too long, so she introduced a new meal, which consisted drinking tea served with an easy meal, like sandwiches, scones, cakes etc. Throughout time the way of serving afternoon tea became a matter of prestige, a way to impress ones guests. Afternoon tea is held outside when the weather is nice, in lounges…

There is a story that during the Second World War, speaking in weight, more tea was sent to the soldiers than ammunition. Everything is important if you want to serve proper British afternoon tea. There are rules in which flavors, colors, and tastes are served. Something that is more typical is that British people take their tea with milk, few take it with lemon, but not squeezed in the tea just pieces of it. Enjoy the photos of one of the most important traditions of Britain.
